Components of the Cervical Screening Test (CST)

HPV Test

HPV testing within the NCSP includes partial genotyping for HPV types 16 and 18, as these types are managed differently to other oncogenic HPV types (not 16/18) in the program. Compared with other oncogenic HPV types, HPV types 16 and 18 are associated with cervical abnormalities that are less likely to regress and more likely to progress to high grade lesions and cervical cancer. Identification of HPV 16 and 18 with partial genotyping improves risk stratification for women in the cervical screening program. (17)
