Trichomonas vaginalis is a protozoan causing cervicitis and vaginitis. It is usually sexually acquired by intravaginal inoculation with body fluids containing the organism (vaginal exudates, semen, urine). It is thought to be uncommon in the general urban population in Australia. The prevalence in some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women may be up to 30 times higher than in non-Indigenous people. Studies of trichomoniasis prevalence have shown an association with remoteness to be the critical factor, rather than Indigenous status.
