In premenopausal women almost all ovarian cysts are benign and many are also asymptomatic. Asymptomatic cysts are common, with one study finding a prevalence of 6.6 per cent among premenopausal women. Where symptoms are present, the overall incidence of an ovarian cyst in a premenopausal female being malignant is approximately 1:1000 increasing to 3:1000 at the age of 50.
